ON THIS DAY in the ABBA history ...
On September 17, 1983, Frida and Daniel Balavoine performed the song 'Belle' (French vocal version of 'Arrival' from the Abbacadabra musical) on French TV.
Daniel Balavoine was a very gifted and popular musician, but unfortunately he died much too soon. He was in a helicopter with his wife in Africa on January 14, 1986. The helicopter disintegrated without explanation, killing all passengers. He was buried in Biarritz.

More info about the song
Summer Night City
35 years ago - on 6 September in 1978 - ABBA released their single "Summer Night City" (in the UK - 16 September, 1978).
Written by Benny Andersson and Bjrn Ulvaeus it was a tribute to their hometown of Stockholm. It is the group's second non-album single. It was originally intended as the lead single from the group's upcoming "Voulez-Vous" album, but was eventually not included.
The recording sessions for "Summer Night City" began in early 1978. It had the working title "Kalle Skndare".
ABBA's new recording studio, Polar Music Studio, had opened in May 1978, but had not been ready to use initially, so the primary backing track had been recorded at Metronome Studio.
A 43-second ballad-style introduction to the song had been edited out to improve the overall quality, but nothing seemed to work. Allegedly, mixing the single took at least a week, far more than it took to mix any other track in ABBA's recording history.
They felt something was wrong with the recording but couldn't put their finger on it. In the end, the song had an enormous amount of compression applied to it to give it a more "driving" sound.
Agnetha has been quoted as saying she didn't like the song to start with, as she felt "it wasn't ABBA" but later on grew to like it. A reluctant ABBA decided to release "Summer Night City" as a single in September despite their disappointment with the track in its current form.
The group still performed the song live on their 1979 world tour, though with the original introduction that had been removed from the studio recording. The unreleased version with the extended introduction was finally released as part of the box set Thank You for the Music.
Their ambivalence about the record has surfaced occasionally in interviews where Benny has said "we shouldn't have released that one", and Bjorn called the recording "really lousy".
Despite the group's negative views of the song, "Summer Night City" was another sizeable hit for ABBA, albeit not one of their biggest.
It topped the charts in Ireland, Finland and Sweden; the group's last No.1 in their home country. It also reached the Top 5 in Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Rhodesia and Switzerland. In the UK, "Summer Night City" reached No.7 in the charts and then dropped, which was ABBA's lowest peak position for three and a half years.
This caused concern for the group given that it was their first release after a seven-month break; the single however reached a new peak of No.5 the following week. Nevertheless, it remained ABBA's lowest-charting single in the UK for the period 1976-1980.
In October 1979, more than a year after its release, "Summer Night City" was included on the ABBA compilation album "Greatest Hits Vol. 2."
The single's B-side was a medley of the American traditional songs "Pick a Bale of Cotton", "On Top of Old Smokey", and "Midnight Special", which the group had recorded in 1975. This was the only song released by ABBA that was not written by any of the members themselves.
On the single, "Medley" was actually a remix of the original 1975 version that had been issued on the German charity album Stars im Zeichen eines guten Sterns (Polydor).
However, the 1978 mix is very similar, so much so that a mistake was made in the booklet notes of the 1994 4-CD boxed set Thank You for the Music. It turned out that the 1975 mix was included in that set but it was claimed to be the 1978 mix.
The "Medley" mystery was allegedly solved when the UK single master tapes were returned by Epic Records to Polar Music in Sweden in the early 2000s. As the UK tapes had definitely included the 1978 mix, it then became possible to determine which mix was which. – Stockholm, Stockholms Ln, Sweden.

The ABBA Collection by Thomas Nordin – the biggest collection of ABBA memorabilia ever put up for auction, 25,000 items!
It all started back in 1974, when nine-year-old Thomas Nordin settled down in front of the TV to watch the contest to select the Swedish entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. But he fell asleep and missed ABBA …
However, when the main competition was held in Brighton, he managed to stay awake and witnessed the Swedish quartet’s march to victory. His mother then bought him the single “Waterloo” and the die was cast. Thomas has a lot to thank ABBA for – even his choice of career was down to the Swedish pop sensation. When he saw their fantastic costumes, he was so fascinated by them that he decided to become a tailor. He followed his dream and now works as a master tailor, cutting and making stage costumes.
Thomas Nordin started collecting everything ABBA-related he could get his hands on, and today – 39 years later – his collection comprises an astounding 25,000 items. Naturally, there are a great many records with highlights including the LP featuring “Ring Ring”, Japan 1973, an alternative mix of the single “Waterloo”, and the 12-inch versions of “Hovas Vittne” and “Sång till Grel”. The collection also includes unusual merchandise from the United States, Japan and Australia. For example, there are ABBA clogs made exclusively for the American market, rare ABBA soaps and ABBA dolls, a huge collection of clippings and books, and authentic posters.
In 1999, the entire collection was loaned out to “ABBA The Exhibition” at Nordiska Museet in Stockholm, Sweden. Thomas also loaned some of his records to the travelling exhibition “ABBA World”, which was hosted in venues in London, Australia and Hungary, for example, before finding a permanent home at ABBA The Museum, which is to open in Stockholm on 7 May.

2013.06.27. 17:14 |
The next release in the ABBA Deluxe Edition series revisits ABBA’s dbut album, Ring Ring, originally issued in 1973. Featuring the very first ABBA recording, ‘People Need Love’, along with well-known tracks such as ‘He Is Your Brother’ and the groundbreaking title track, the original album has been expanded with no less than 13 bonus tracks, 4 of which are new to CD, plus a DVD of rare television material. Ring Ring Deluxe Edition will be released October 14, 2013.
The first disc in the 2-disc package is a CD, which features the original album plus 13 bonus tracks. The bonus selections seek to expand the view of the album by including not only various non-album single sides, but also the rare original versions of the album tracks ‘I Saw It In The Mirror’ and ‘I Am Just A Girl’, both of which were Bjrn and Benny productions for other artists.
The scope of ABBA’s early years is further expanded by bonus tracks such as the rare 1970 recording ‘There’s A Little Man’, featuring Agnetha on backing vocals, her first contribution to a recording written and produced by Bjrn and Benny; ‘Man vill ju leva lite dessemellan’, a 1972 hit single for Frida featuring backing vocals by her fellow ABBA members; ‘En hlsning till våra parkarrangrer’, an ultra-rare spoken-word promotion single from 1972 on which the four ABBA members talk up their 1973 tour of Sweden; ‘Hej gamle man!’, the 1970 hit recording that was the first to feature all four ABBA members; and the 1971 single ‘Vlkommen till vrlden’ by Lill-Babs, written and produced by Benny and enhanced by prominent backing vocals by the four future ABBA members.
The DVD features rare television performances of ‘People Need Love’ and ‘Ring Ring’ from Swedish and Austrian TV, respectively, plus a 2012 report from Swedish television wherein Benny tells the story of the writing and recording of ‘Ring Ring’, the first song to feature the famous multi-layered ABBA sound. In the report, Benny goes in-depth on the group’s creative process, isolating the different tracks on the original multi-track tape.
The package also includes a 20-page illustrated booklet featuring an extensive essay on the making of the album.
Don’t miss out on this Deluxe Edition of Ring Ring – featuring Agnetha, Bjrn, Benny and Frida’s first steps towards international stardom!
